Why Music?
Music programs allow students to have fun while learning a new skill that encompasses many other subjects. The website for the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) says “Music is a science, music is mathematical, music is a physical education, music is a foreign language, music is history, and most importantly, music is an art.” Music requires precision, and a conductor’s score is just a chart. Music is based on rhythms, fractions which are calculated instantaneously, not on paper. Music requires immense coordination, along with lots of stamina. Most music notations are in French or Italian, and the circles and lines on the music are definitely not English, rather a complicated system of shorthand that represents universal ideas. Music history is taught to see how the piece would fit and work with others. Music combines different high school subjects, then makes it art.

Music teaches life skills as well. Learning an instrument takes tons of perseverance, determination, and many other positive qualities you would want in a job applicant.

Music classes have been a safe haven for students for decades. Music classrooms and programs are always accepting of new students, providing a safe space for kids to unwind when they are having a bad day, and music teachers are always at school and around to help. Music gives students a chance to relax instead of having just another class where they are stressed about the upcoming test. Music lets students let loose and have fun while learning. As an added bonus, music programs often send musicians on trips across the state, country, or even the world.
